Aberrant-plumaged Hairy Woodpecker

..with truly brown tertials and greater coverts, brownish primaries, and an odd pattern to the red on the head.

The breast coloration also is more typical of Hairy Woodpeckers from the Pacific Northwest population west of the Cascade crest, which seems unusual, though Cle Elum is fairly close to the crest, and a certain amount of crossover seems likely.

This bird was found by Michael Hobbs, Brian Bell, Sharon Aagaard, and Mark Crawford, and was photographed by Michael Hobbs in Cle Elum, Kittitas County, Washington on 2009-12-13

Note the red on the head is neatly divided into two circular patches,
each partially ringed by white.
