NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULE CHANGE

Marymoor Park R/C Model Field

As R/C model flying becomes increasingly popular and with the performance of R/C models changing dramatically in recent years, larger and faster models are becoming more common at the Marymoor Park R/C modeling field.  Consequently, engine noise and over flight of public areas are now of significant concern to the Marymoor R/C club, park neighbors and King County Parks. The Marymoor R/C Club, to address these concerns, to improve overall rule enforcement and to foster continued use of the Park for R/C flying, has proposed two rule changes.

If approved by King County Parks, the following new requirements will be in place for the flying of R/C model aircraft at Marymoor Park, to be phased in during the summer of 2010:

  1. All internal combustion powered model aircraft must be certified as conforming to a 90dBA noise limit. The Marymoor R/C Club on a scheduled basis will do noise testing at the Marymoor Park R/C facility.
  2. All R/C modelers using the Marymoor Park model flying facility will be required to have current membership in the Marymoor R/C Club in addition to the existing requirement of a current AMA Open Class membership.

This is to provide King County Parks with assistance in rule compliance enforcement. Users involved with inappropriate activity will be subject to club sanctions, including possible loss of flying privileges.

Since 1982, the Marymoor R/C Club has maintained a cooperative operations agreement with King County Parks. Marymoor R/C Club volunteers conduct all the routine and specialized tasks necessary to maintain the modeling field. Field related supplies and equipment costs are primarily paid for by Marymoor R/C Club dues.

Club members actively promote safe modeling, host special events to encourage public appreciation of the hobby and are the primary provider of on-site enforcement of the R/C flying facility rules. The club is a founding member and an active participant of the Friends of Marymoor Park advisory group, established in 1997.

Comments on this proposal will be accepted by King County Parks through February 28, 2010.  Please send comment to the Marymoor Business Office, ATTN: Norah Gaynor, PO Box 3517, Redmond, WA 98073, 206-205-3661, MarymoorPark@kingcounty.gov.
